Are You Struggling to Find the Time to Exercise?

Try this to become more consistent and committed to your training

By Marco Augusto

In this week's article, I want to discuss time management; I know, a thrilling topic. But poor time management is one of the main reasons people don't train.

In fact, it probably goes beyond time management, and into something we all struggle with: focus.

Are You Managing Your Time?

Probably the most common reason for not training, is a lack of time.

This isn't a surprise, because with work, other commitments and possibly a family, training is the first thing that gets dropped from the schedule.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean it isn't important.

In fact, how you perform at work, with your commitments or your family, is going to be directly affected by the care you give yourself.

Simply put, if you put everything and everyone first, you'll suffer.

It's up to you to take personal responsibility.

Make It Obvious

How do you find the time?

Most people are aware of consistent "meetings" they have: the amount of time at work, kids soccer practice, Board Meetings etc. As a result, they either mentally prepare for that or actually schedule it into their diary.

Training is the same. You literally have to schedule training into your diary.

The time, the location, the duration.

Time to train needs to be booked in like everything else.

On a Sunday night, set aside 10 minutes to plan out your week INCLUDING the days and times you will train.

Unless it is in your diary, unless you set it as a priority, unless you focus on it, it will never be done.

This is called an implementation intention, something James Clear discusses in his book Atomic Habits.

One way for us to increase our chances of implement a habit successfully, is to make it obvious.

If we can be clear about when and where we're going to do our exercise, we become more likely to follow through with that plan.

This is how it might look in your calendar, or if you wrote a note for yourself:

I will [EXERCISE/TRAIN] at [TIME] in [LOCATION].

So as an example, that might look like:

I will do weight training at Tuesday 6pm in Bob's Awesome Strength Gym.

And of course, a calendar would just have that time on a Tuesday, with the location set as well, just like you would any other meeting.

Book in a meeting with yourself at the gym/box/training facility/beach/wherever, and attend to it the way you would any other meeting at work or social catch up.

Make training a priority in your schedule, and you'll find the time.

Make sure you're clear and concise, and all of a sudden you'll find the time and consistency to help you achieve your results.

Until next time,

Marco Augusto
