Other Fitness Goals You Can Pursue for 2022

Weight loss doesn’t need to be the only goal

By Marco Augusto

Without doubt the most common fitness goal is to lose weight and as we start the new year, there's no doubt plenty of people have this as their new year's resolution.

Of course, the goal of weight loss is driven by a desire to look good for others, and we're definitely sold on that idea enough through the media.

But it also has some merit to it, as maintaining a healthy weight has benefits for our long term health, physically and mentally.

This can become a problem when the goal of a six pack can be confused with being healthy.

What many people forget is that weight loss is not the only fitness goal you can have for 2022.

Indeed, many of the other goals you could aim for in 2022 will likely lead to not only more satisfaction, but the weight loss you seek in the first place.

Here are a few other goals you could pursue in 2022:

Competition Goals:

You may be intimidated by this idea, especially if you're not naturally competitive.

But the idea isn't to win as such.

The idea is to compete, do your best, and to be involved in a community that might be different to what you're usually involved in.

The training required to compete to a level you'll be satisfied with will not only likely lead to competing successfully, but often lead to weight loss anyway, as you change habits and increase movement.

Some common competition goals:

fitness competition, powerlifting, weightlifting, triathlons, marathons, other distance runs, obstacle course races, dancing etc.

It should be noted, with a competition goal, the steps after the competition can be just as  important.

The finality of the competition can provide more motivation.

Or it can equally signal the end of motivation, as the finality of the date leaves an uncertain future.

Before the competition, make a rough plan or goal for time beyond the competition, and after the competition, review these

Performance Goals:

Performance goals are probably the easiest to track and control.

Whereas weight loss can be affected by a number of outside variables (and generally, n = 1 when it comes to the best path for you), and competition goals depend of the other competitors as well, performance goals are personal and often in our control.

Performance goals, at least from my experience personally and with clients, are generally the goals that people find most motivational.

The amount of clients who have come in looking for weight loss, only to find more satisfaction in performance goals, much more than you would initially expect.

And there really is some personal satisfaction is lifting a weight you never thought you could do.

And as mentioned above, so often chasing a goal like this, actually leads to weight loss, without focusing on it.

Another benefit of performance goals, is they tend only to be limited to your commitment.

While a weight loss goal requires an immense amount of commitment as well, once you've lost that 10kg for example, there's not a lot more to lose.

Are you going to train to become a bag of sticks?

So weight loss goals tend to come to a natural ending or limit, and from there it becomes more about maintenance.

Performance goals however can stretch and shift a lot more easily, meaning they can provide motivation for years and years, leading to a long term healthy lifestyle and habit.

Consistency Goals:

Achieving any goal will require consistent time and effort to be put in.

And so consistency goals are a great way to focus on the process more so than the results themselves.

Consistency goals are probably the simplest in essence, but also the hardest to achieve.

Examples of consistency goals:

Train 'X' times per week, move 'X' amount of minutes per day, do 'X' amount of reps of a particular exercise, etc.

Again, what makes consistency goals so appealing, is that they put less focus on the results, often things we can't control, and on the process and effort we put in.

In other words, they put the emphasis on ourselves, the one thing we can truly control.
